Vice President of Engineering
Tom Phelps is the Vice President of Engineering at Accion Systems. In this role, Mr. Phelps leads the development and product strategy for Accion’s in-space propulsion system, as well as planning for future technologies and products.
Mr. Phelps’ career has spanned the spectrum of robotics, semiconductor test and telecommunications industries. Prior to joining Accion, Mr. Phelps was Senior Director of New Products at Endeavor Robotics, formerly the government arm of iRobot. At Endeavor, Mr. Phelps was responsible for developing robotic solutions that met the evolving mission needs of the defense, public safety and industrial markets. The product initiatives that Mr. Phelps managed while at Endeavor resulted in two significant contracts with the U.S. DoD. The first robotic platform was selected for the MTRS Inc II Army program of record, a $158M program to deliver 1,200 robotic systems over 5 years. The second platform was down selected for the EMD phase for the CRS(I) Army program of record (a $20M program). FLIR Systems acquired Endeavor in March 2019.
Prior to his role at Endeavor Robotics, Mr. Phelps held management positions in program management, product development, business development and technical operations at iRobot, Enterasys Networks, Appian Communications, IronBridge Networks and Teradyne. At iRobot, Mr. Phelps led the North American business development team increasing non-DoD revenue for defense and security UGVs by an 89.76% CAGR over 3 years. Prior to running the business development team, Mr. Phelps was the Director of UGV Products where he was responsible for managing the Defense and Security product portfolio for iRobot. In this role, Mr. Phelps defined the product roadmap, customer engagement strategies and provided oversight for the product development programs. His team was responsible for the development and lifecycle management of the FirstLook, SUGV (Gen 2), PackBot (Gen 2), Kobra and uPoint Multi-Robot Controller systems. Mr. Phelps also has considerable experience in technical operations and supply chain management, having coordinated the new product introduction and production ramp-up activities for semiconductor test equipment, telecommunications routers / switches and complex robotic systems.
Mr. Phelps holds a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering and MBA from Boston University.
